Director of Bands and Instrumental Ensembles
Born in Guam, U.S.A., Mr. Knight moved to Dover, DE. Under the instruction of Mr. Richard Steinhoff, he started playing percussion in the 6th grade. The following year, he went to Central Middle School, where met one of the legends in music education, Mr. John Rinker. Mr Rinker became his mentor and inspired him to be better in his playing ability. In his high school years, he attended Dover High School for 4 years and was instructed by, another legend of Delaware Music Education, Mr. Ronald Shomo. In his senior year, he earned his role as drum captain and graduated in 1989. In that same year, he was accepted into Delaware State University with a full scholarship in music education. Because of unfortunate circumstances,he had to make a choice of what he wanted to do with his life. So he decided to stay in Delaware but had to sacrifice college in the process for 4 1/2 years. During those years he decided to volunteer his time to drum instruct for local high schools all over Kent County. These schools included (in order) Central Middle School, Dover High School, Lake Forest High School, Milford High School, Smyrna High School , and Poly-Tech High School. But of course his main drum instructing job was at Dover High School. During those years at DHS, his drumline, also known as "Rolling Thunder", earned high honors and awards all over the East Coast including a top festival award in 1999 and a National Grand Champion Festival Award in 2005. During his fourth year drum instructing with DHS, he was able to return to college and earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Instrumental Music Education. Mr. Knight is now in his 21th year with Dover High School and has helped his groups earn numerous awards. Under the direction of Mr. Knight, the Rolling Thunder Drumline has performed for NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt Jr., the Philadelphia 76ers twice, Jon Bon Jovi and the Philadelphia Soul and the Wilmington Blue Rocks. In 2005, they have also earned a National recognized Grand Championahip in a drumline division held down in Nassau, Bahamas scoring a 98 out of 100 points. In the 2007-2008 school year Mr. Knight was recognized in the 11th Edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers as one of the nation's most respected teachers and was named head director of bands. He was also DMEA's Teacher of the Month for May of 2012. This year, Mr. Knight is serving as the honorary band director for the Delaware Blue and Gold Marching Band for his 5th consecutive year.
